A Project I'm Most Proud Of

Kentucky Safe Teen Driving Challenge

A statewide, multi-agency safety campaign involving the Governor’s Office, AAA, and education partners

The Challenge

Teen drivers in Kentucky face elevated crash and fatality rates driven largely by preventable behaviors such as distracted driving, speeding, and inconsistent seatbelt use. Addressing this challenge required more than a traditional awareness campaign, it required a program that could engage teens directly, earn trust from schools and families, and demonstrate measurable behavior change within a highly regulated public-sector environment.

Program Leadership & Coordination

I organized and oversaw the Kentucky Safe Teen Driving Challenge from concept through statewide execution, serving as the central coordinator across internal leadership and a broad network of external partners. My role focused on structuring the initiative, aligning stakeholders, and maintaining clear, consistent communication throughout planning and delivery. I worked closely with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Public Affairs Office, the Governor’s Office, AAA, an external advertising agency, school personnel, the Kentucky Education Cabinet, technology partners including Cambridge Mobile Telematics, and regional and statewide news organizations, while keeping agency leadership informed at every stage.

Creative, Web & Communications

In addition to program oversight, I contributed directly to the campaign’s creative and digital execution. I developed campaign graphics and visual assets, designed and developed the campaign landing page, and produced media kits for press outreach and partner communications. I also assisted with the commercial shoot, helping ensure visual consistency and alignment with campaign messaging across paid, earned, and owned media.

The campaign’s digital and creative materials supported a cohesive brand experience across the website, paid advertising, social media, earned media, and live events, including high-visibility press events attended by the Governor of Kentucky and agency leadership.

Campaign Strategy & Execution

The challenge was designed as an app-based competition using real-world driving data, gamification, and incentives to encourage safer driving habits. With a limited paid media budget, we deployed targeted digital advertising to reach teens and parents, supported by partner amplification and media outreach. Creative development and content production were handled primarily in-house to maintain brand integrity and maximize efficiency.

Results & Impact

The program exceeded expectations, engaging more than 1,200 registered teen drivers and logging over 1.3 million miles driven during the challenge period. Participants demonstrated measurable improvements in driving behavior, including reductions in distracted driving, speeding, and hard braking. The initiative also generated significant statewide earned media coverage.

The Kentucky Safe Teen Driving Challenge received an Award of Excellence from the Kentucky Association of Government Communicators (KAGC), recognizing the program’s effectiveness in public engagement, cross-agency collaboration, and measurable impact.

This project reflects my approach to creative and communications leadership: combining strategic oversight with hands-on execution to deliver work that is impactful, accountable, and scalable.
